47 viewsThis is the sign at the ridge where you can cut South to Griffith, or North to "The Meadows" and Mt Charleston.

29 views...so... we turned our gaze upwards, and hiked straight up through the scree to the Summit. This was rough- I advise taking the trail along the ridge!

26 viewsI didn't take many pictures of this area, but this shows what it is like- despite having the trail mapped out on our GPS (from our hike down from Mt Chas last July) the trail was IMPOSSIBLE to follow, and we resorted to hiking straight up through the snow. I would not recommend this trail to anyone for the next few weeks unless you bring snowshoes- I'm not kidding.

24 viewsBriar was so excited to reach the summit she waved our carrots around. (By the way, I've read that carrots are great for high altitude hiking- some chemical helps offset altitude sickness, of which 75% of people exhibit some symptoms over 10K ft)

19 viewsOccasionally I can talk Briar into taking a picture of me, this one of me making a "meahhh, What's up, Doc?" pose with Mt Chas summit in the background. (Briar makes a much cuter model.)

18 viewsWe start down the ridge we SHOULD have come up, directly West of the summit. Lots of snow up here, too.

16 viewsWalking through an old avalanche zone closer to the bottom of the trail. The hike is listed at 5.5 hours, so we expected to hustle through it in about 4, but the snow slowed us down and we finished in a little over 5 hours. (with 4 hours of actual hiking time, according to the GPS)

15 viewsThis plateau is a destination (and camping area) in itself. We encountered hikers who hiked the 2-3 miles to this point then turned back. After sludging through the waist deep snow near the 4 mile mark, I don't blame them!

15 viewsThis is a great shot of the Mt Charleston summit and "The Meadows". At 11,918 ft, Mt Chas is less than 1000 ft higher in elevation than Griffith Peak.
