50 viewsThis is on one of the small bridges that pass over the creek. (Merced River) Later in the day, the water would be MUCH higher and stronger.

49 viewsThis is in the Valley near Curry Village. Briar points to the Half-Dome cables (around the back of the rock)

47 viewsAfter a long and steep climb, the trail leveled out for a bit.
DSCF4660.jpg
47 viewsDon't get caught speeding in the park. The forest rangers will patronize you: "Slow down- it's icing up." The road was dry.
DSCF4583.jpg
44 viewsAbout 15 minutes into the hike we started to shed our layers. Note how our clothing changes throughout our hike.

43 viewsAnd then, out of nowhere, this huge ugly monster jumped out and attacked Andy. However, he put up a good fight and conquered the beast.

38 viewsIt POURED the entire drive

38 viewsAs we got further North in Nevada, the distant mountain ranges and rain clouds looked even more amazing in the sunset. Rain clouds are a novelty in the desert!
DSCF4582.jpg
38 viewsHere we are, bleary eyed at about 7am, all bundled up and ready to head to the trail head.
DSCF4600.jpg
38 viewsAt this point we're about a mile from the top and the snow started.... yes, snow.
DSCF4609.jpg
37 viewsJust before the climb became vertical, we realized that continuing would be a death wish, as the granite rock face was extremely slippery due to the relentless precipitation. We made it to the eighth board before turning around and SLIDING back down, holding onto the cables for dear life.

36 viewsCamera card full! This is along Rt 6, which heads East into Nevada. If you click on the picture to enlarge, you can see a small rainbow just right of center. The rain clouds were scattered, and at the time it wasn't even raining on us. The freshly snow-capped mountains made for great scenery as we headed back to the desert!

35 viewsWe stopped here for a bathroom break. Its one of the only establishments in the town of Lathrop Wells. You really can't miss it. Much like the hairstyle of many of the patrons, there was a business up front and a party in the back. The bar was fairly quiet, though.
DSCF4584.jpg
35 viewsUp ahead is Vernal Falls. Apparently this is just a trickle compared to how it falls in the spring time. We are on the Mist Trail which is the shorter, yet MUCH steeper, way to get to the top of Half Dome.
DSCF4586.jpg
34 viewsTop of Vernal Falls, looking out over the gorge through which we just climbed.
DSCF4588.jpg
34 viewsThe higher we got, the clouds started to appear at eye-level.

33 viewsWe then drove to Glacier Point, and took the short walk to the overlook. This provides the best view of the hike we took on Saturday. You can see the 594 ft tall Nevada falls on the lower right of the photo.

DSCF4605.jpg
28 viewsThe pile of gloves, left by previous climbers. The metal cables would tear up your hands without these! We brought our own, but it was so cold they hardly helped.
DSCF4594.jpg
27 viewsThe fungus, (lichens?) up close. Many of the fire-damaged trees were totally covered with it!
DSCF4641.jpg
27 viewsWe started back down the Mist Trail, and stopped for some cool pictures.
