17 viewsWe left Vegas around 4pm, and the rain started before we got to Indian Springs. There were puddles on Rt 95 deep enough to cause some hydroplaning, and we were incredibly thankful for the Audi all-wheel-drive and ESP traction control system.

27 viewsIt POURED the entire drive

15 viewsThe low clouds mostly obscured the Mt Charleston (Spring Mountain) range, but there were openings where we could see the 1st snow of the season on the summit of Mummy Mountain.

29 viewsAs we got further North in Nevada, the distant mountain ranges and rain clouds looked even more amazing in the sunset. Rain clouds are a novelty in the desert!

31 viewsWe stopped here for a bathroom break. Its one of the only establishments in the town of Lathrop Wells. You really can't miss it. Much like the hairstyle of many of the patrons, there was a business up front and a party in the back. The bar was fairly quiet, though.

38 viewsHere we are, bleary eyed at about 7am, all bundled up and ready to head to the trail head.

39 viewsAbout 15 minutes into the hike we started to shed our layers. Note how our clothing changes throughout our hike.

33 viewsUp ahead is Vernal Falls. Apparently this is just a trickle compared to how it falls in the spring time. We are on the Mist Trail which is the shorter, yet MUCH steeper, way to get to the top of Half Dome.

32 viewsTop of Vernal Falls, looking out over the gorge through which we just climbed.

38 viewsThis is on one of the small bridges that pass over the creek. (Merced River) Later in the day, the water would be MUCH higher and stronger.

32 viewsThe higher we got, the clouds started to appear at eye-level.

20 viewsA lot of the trees had neon green fungus growing on the branches. It was quite beautiful.

23 viewsThrough the tall trees is a tiny glimpse of Nevada Falls.

37 viewsAfter a long and steep climb, the trail leveled out for a bit.

24 viewsThe fungus, (lichens?) up close. Many of the fire-damaged trees were totally covered with it!

25 viewsWe found ourselves in the thick of an ominous looking forest....

22 viewsIt was eerily quiet as the fog moved in...

42 viewsAnd then, out of nowhere, this huge ugly monster jumped out and attacked Andy. However, he put up a good fight and conquered the beast.

21 viewsFirst rain, then heavy rain, then sleet...

34 viewsAt this point we're about a mile from the top and the snow started.... yes, snow.
